Sake in Osaka
Osaka Prefecture lies in the Kinki region and faces Osaka Bay to the west. The Osaka Sake Brewers Association, founded in 1953, has 15 member brewing companies (as of October 2026). Of these, 14 are sake breweries, located in three areas: Hokusetsu, Kawachi and Izumi.
In the one year from July 2024 to June 2025, sake was made at 12 places in the prefecture. Tonda in Takatsuki City, in Hokusetsu, flourished as a sake-brewing town in the Edo period. Two sake breweries still stand in Tonda today and continue to make sake.
Amanosan Kongoji, in Kawachinagano City in the south, is a temple said to have been founded in the Nara period. At its height it was a large temple with about 80 sub-temples (small temples within its grounds), and crafts such as brewing “天野酒” were carried out within its grounds. Today a brewery in Kawachinagano City carries on this name with the cooperation of Kongoji and makes sake.
