Who will enjoy this brewery

  • People who have already tried several kinds of sake and want to go a step further
  • People who prefer quiet, clear sake to sake with a strong aroma
  • People who want to pair sake with sashimi and sushi
  • People interested in sake made with Yamada Nishiki grown in Special A (Toku-A) districts

About Isojiman Shuzo

The Isojiman (磯自慢) brewery does not accept brewery tours. It is a brewery that does not put large tourist facilities or publicity for the general public at the front (as of September 4, 2026). What this brewery shows to the outside is only what is in the bottle.

It is located in Yaizu (焼津), Shizuoka Prefecture. Yaizu is a fishing port town known for its landings of tuna and skipjack tuna (katsuo). The brewery is right next to the port, in Iwashigashima (鰯ヶ島). It was founded in 1830.

Rice, yeast and water

Rice

The rice used for Isojiman’s main brands is Yamada Nishiki (山田錦) grown in Special A (Toku-A) districts. Yamada Nishiki is a sake rice variety suited to making sake, and Special A is one of the production-area classifications for Yamada Nishiki.

Yeast

The yeast used for Isojiman’s main brands is yeast kept at the brewery (蔵内保存).

Water

The brewery uses underground water from the Oi River (大井川), part of the Southern Alps water system, as its brewing water.

The rice and yeast used differ from product to product. Please check the label for the types used.

Visiting the brewery

The brewery does not offer brewery tours. Please do not apply for interviews or tours.

Yaizu, the town

  • Yaizu Fishing Port: One of Japan’s leading ports for landings of tuna and skipjack tuna. There are many seafood rice bowl (kaisendon) restaurants in the city, and “going to Yaizu to eat its fish” makes more sense as a trip than “going to drink Isojiman”.
  • Yaizu is close to central Shizuoka City and can be reached from Shizuoka Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen (high-speed rail)
  • The brewery is about 7 minutes by car from JR Yaizu Station

Travel tip: You can plan a trip that stops at Shizuoka on the way between Tokyo and Kyoto by Shinkansen. A combination of Mount Fuji + Yaizu seafood + Isojiman adds depth to the classic route.

Where to buy Isojiman Shuzo’s sake

Isojiman Shuzo publishes a list of “authorized retailers that carry Isojiman” on its official website. To guarantee quality, the brewery recommends buying from authorized retailers (tokuyakuten: liquor stores that trade directly with the brewery). The list includes 51 stores across Japan, excluding the brewery’s home city of Yaizu (checked on September 30, 2026).

Authorized retailers that are easy to visit during your trip

We have chosen stores in Tokyo, Shizuoka, Kyoto and Osaka from the official list.

The store names and addresses are kept in Japanese so that you can show them to a taxi driver or paste them into a map app.

Before you buy

  • Whether a store carries the sake, and what it has in stock, differ from store to store. Limited-edition and seasonal products may not arrive, so please check with the store before visiting.
  • The brewery recommends keeping the sake in the refrigerator until you open it. Some products must be kept refrigerated, so check the storage temperature shown on the label, and avoid carrying the sake around for long periods in summer.
  • If you are taking sake home abroad: Bottles over 100 ml cannot go in your carry-on bag before security screening. Put them in your checked baggage, or buy them at a duty-free shop after security screening. Please check in advance what applies if you have a connecting flight, and the import limits of the country you are arriving in. → Travel tips
