About Toshimaya Shuzo
Toshimaya Shuzo (豊島屋酒造) is a sake brewery in 久米川町, Higashimurayama (東村山市), Tokyo. Its brands are “Kinkon (金婚)” and “Okunokami (屋守)”.
The brewery’s roots go back to “Toshimaya”, a sake shop that opened in Kanda, Edo, in 1596 (the 1st year of the Keicho era). It began making sake in Higashimurayama in 1935 (the 10th year of the Showa era), and Toshimaya Shuzo as a company was also founded that year. The Toshimaya of Kanda still exists in Chiyoda City as “Toshimaya Honten Co., Ltd.” (株式会社豊島屋本店), and it is an affiliated company of Toshimaya Shuzo.
You can tour the brewery. A paid brewery tour that needs no booking is held every Saturday (checked on September 30, 2026).
From a sake shop in Kanda to a brewery in suburban Tokyo
Toshimaya began in 1596 as a shop opened by the first generation, 豊島屋十右衛門, at 鎌倉河岸 in Kanda (near today’s 神田橋 bridge). It was a sake shop and, at the same time, a tavern where people could drink standing at the shopfront. 十右衛門 also began brewing shirozake (白酒: a sweet white drink enjoyed around the time of the Doll Festival), which won a good reputation in Edo. Toshimaya also appears in “江戸名所図会”, an illustrated guide to famous places from the Edo period.
It was in 1935 that Toshimaya set up a brewery in Higashimurayama, away to the west of central Tokyo. Higashimurayama is a city in the northern part of the area of Tokyo called “多摩”.
For brewing, the brewery uses underground water pumped up from 150 meters below the ground.
Two brands: Kinkon and Okunokami
Kinkon
“Kinkon (金婚)” is Toshimaya’s long-standing brand. Its full name is “金婚正宗”, and it was named with the wish to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of Emperor Meiji.
Products sold under the Kinkon name include, for example, the following. Prices are as shown on the brewery’s official website (tax included) (checked on September 30, 2026).
- 純米無濾過原酒 十右衛門 — A product named after the first generation. It is a “junmai-shu”, made only from rice, rice koji and water, and a “genshu (undiluted sake)”, neither filtered nor diluted with water after pressing. 2,198 yen for 720 ml
- 純米吟醸 金婚 — A “junmai ginjo”: made only from rice, rice koji and water, with 40% or more of the outer part of the rice polished away, and fermented slowly at a low temperature. 2,255 yen for 720 ml; a small 300 ml bottle is also available
- 純米大吟醸 銀婚 — A “junmai daiginjo”: made only from rice, rice koji and water, with more than half of the outer part of the rice polished away. The sake rice (rice suited to making sake) is 八反錦. 4,565 yen for 720 ml
Okunokami
“Okunokami (屋守)” is a brand named with the wish to keep protecting Toshimaya Shuzo, and the wish to protect the prosperity of the liquor stores and restaurants that handle its sake.
Okunokami is made in small batches that place as much weight as possible on handwork. The concept the brewery sets out is “a good aroma and a gentle taste” (from “Introducing Okunokami” on Toshimaya Shuzo’s official website). All Okunokami is shipped “unadjusted”, neither filtered nor diluted with water after pressing, and all of it is stored in bottles.
“屋守 純米中取” received the “Tokyo Junmai Trophy” in the SAKE category of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2026.
The Okunokami brand has several products, and the ingredients and brewing methods differ from product to product. Please check the label for the type.
Visiting the brewery
Saturday brewery tours
Toshimaya Shuzo holds brewery tours every Saturday. No booking is needed. As you walk around the brewery, you are guided through the sake-making process and the skills passed down at the brewery.

The tours are described as held every Saturday, but the tour dates in September 2026 were the 12th, 19th and 26th, and there were Saturdays without a tour. Please check each month’s tour dates on the top page of the brewery’s official website.
The brewery also holds evening brewery tours and events where you can drink sake on the spot. Please ask the brewery how to take part.
Brewery shop “KAMOSHI no BA”
The brewery shop sells Kinkon and other sake, including seasonal and event-only sake. Opening hours are 9:00–17:00 on weekdays. Weekend opening varies by day and is announced on the brewery’s official website (in September 2026, the 26th and 27th, 13:00–17:00) (checked on September 30, 2026).

- By train: The nearest station is Higashi-Murayama Station on the Seibu Railway. Trains on the Seibu Shinjuku Line, Kokubunji Line and Seibuen Line stop there. It is about a 20-minute walk from the station to the brewery
