About Miyoshikiku Shuzo

Miyoshikiku Shuzo (三芳菊酒造) is a small sake brewery in Ikeda, Miyoshi (三好市池田町), Tokushima Prefecture. 馬宮作太郎 began making sake here in 1889. In 2024, a new company, “株式会社三芳菊酒造” (Miyoshikiku Shuzo Co., Ltd.), took over the business, and its Representative Director is 馬宮和子. Its brand is “Miyoshikiku (三芳菊)”.

Brewery tours are available (paid, booking required; checked on September 30, 2026). Tours and sake-making experiences are booked through the official website of the local tourism organization “にし阿波~剣山・吉野川観光圏”.

Awa-Ikeda, a town on the upper Yoshino River

Awa-Ikeda (阿波池田) is a town in the central part of Shikoku, on the upper reaches of the Yoshino River (吉野川).

The same city of Miyoshi also has the gorge of Oboke and the mountain villages of Iya. The “Kazurabashi” (かずら橋) in Iya is a suspension bridge woven from the vines of a plant called シラクチカズラ. It is 45 meters long and 14 meters above the water. It is rebuilt every 3 years, and is designated a national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.

Miyoshikiku Shuzo’s brewing water is spring water from the 松尾川 river, which is underground water of the Yoshino River. It is very soft water.

“Walk on the wild side”

Miyoshikiku Shuzo makes sake that is different from traditional dry sake. In sake, “karakuchi” (dry) does not mean salty or spicy-hot; it means a taste in which you sense little sweetness. The brewery describes its way of thinking on its official website like this.

We threw away the idea that “sake must be like this”, and have devoted ourselves to creating the world of a single sake. Rather than walking on the rails, we “walk on the wild side”.

The label designs, too, are made with the intention of not looking like typical sake labels.

In the early 2000s, the brewery gave up the traditional system of leaving sake making to a toji (master brewer), and the head of the family at the time took on the role of toji and began making the sake personally. The three daughters of the head of the family helped with the brewery’s work from a young age, and the sake the three of them later brewed together was the start of “三姉妹のお酒” (“the three sisters’ sake”).

Miyoshikiku has many products, and the ingredients and brewing methods differ from product to product. Please check the label for the type and the name of the rice.
